Folkommotion started because of the shocking lack of venues for acoustic music in the Kansas City area. Sure, you can go to a house concert occasionally, but what good does that do the artist?

We've noticed that acoustic music fans are a fairly loyal bunch, with limitations. They aren't, as a class of people, heavy drinkers and that hurts the artists. Clubs book acts based on their ability to draw in drinkers and lots of 'em. It has become a self-defeating system. There is plenty of talent out there, but unless you're a singer/songwriter with a bunch of party boys that follow you from club to club, forget it.

Folkommotion is all about acoustic music and acoustic musicians. "Acoustic" is not just folk, but also acoustic blues, spoken word, "unplugged" pop/rock/country, and singer/songwriter fare. When you buy a ticket to a Folkommotion show, you are supporting the artist - we don't take a cut from ticket proceeds or merchandise sales. In addition to supporting local acoustic music, we work with our artists to support local charities. Many of our shows feature small benefit raffles for local causes. From time to time, concerts will incorporate readings from local writers and young poets.
